Natalie Luczkowiak offered an update on the Dunkirk Hero Banner Program Monday.

The Dunkirk Hero Banner Program honoring veterans will get to use Central Avenue between Seventh Street and Millard Fillmore Drive this year, City Councilmember Natalie Luczkowiak said Monday.

Luczkowiak is chair of the program committee. She said at a city Economic Development Committee meeting that National Grid will allow its electric poles to be used on that section of the avenue.

The utility warned to put the banners below transmission mains, “and don’t put them on poles inundated by wires,” Luczkowiak said. She expressed confidence the Department of Public Works would install the banners properly.

The First Ward councilperson added, “Any pole National Grid owns in the city, we are insured for that.”

There are now 222 banners, with 98 additional ones added this year.

Lakefront Boulevard and the lakeside walkway were among the locations where banners were posted last year. Luczkowiak promised to record all the sites of the banners this year and share them with the media.

“Mayor Kate (Wdowiasz) has assured me they will be up by Memorial Day,” she said.
