The United Nations Association of Australia Western Australia Division (UNAAWA) has announced its upcoming World Oceans Day event on June 13, 2023, at the Old Courthouse Fremantle.
This globally recognised day for ocean conservation takes place annually on 8 June. The UNAAWA event will focus on the theme “What does the UN Ocean Decade mean for you?” and aims to raise awareness of the UN Ocean Decade and promote the sustainable management and conservation of Western Australia’s oceans.
The event will feature a thought-provoking discussion with a panel of ocean experts on the latest developments in ocean conservation and sustainability. Event speakers include:
Western Australia is home to some of the world’s most diverse and unique marine life, making it crucial to preserve its oceans for future generations. Western Australia’s coastline is the longest in the country, stretching over 20,000 kilometres, and the state is home to 12 marine parks and reserves, including the world-famous Ningaloo Reef. The UNAAWA event will shed light on these fascinating facts and highlight what can be done together to protect Western Australia’s oceans.
The objective of the event is to inform, inspire, and engage the Western Australian community on the critical issues facing our oceans and the steps we can take to protect them. The expert panel will discuss what everyday people can do to help ocean conservation in Western Australia and beyond, what events and organisations they can get involved with, and what the next steps should be for ocean conservation.
“We are excited to launch this UNAAWA event for World Ocean Day event,” said UNAAWA President, Randhir Amoganathan. “The ocean is such a vital part of our planet, and it’s essential that we work together to protect it. Through this campaign, we hope to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the ocean and its resources, and highlight the role that everyone can play in preserving this vital ecosystem for generations to come.”
