Sports Editor Matt Daniels with a look at what’s going on around the area:

Illinois athletics

Rose Yeboah is the first Illinois women’s track and field athlete to win a national title in the high jump.

Three reasons we love sports today

1. Illinois track and field is again relevant on the national stage. A national champion on Saturday in Rose Yeboah shows that Petros Kyprianou has it rolling.

2. Starting today, Illinois women’s basketball beat writer Joe Vozzelli unveils a new online-only entry to IlliniHQ.com. Named “Green Street” in homage to Illini coach Shauna Green and the C-U street that is synonymous with the UI campus, Vozzelli will unveil the latest on the Illini at 9 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

3. Rantoul Family Sports Complex hosts the fourth annual National Team Identification Series for USA Baseball from Monday through Wednesday. The event brings more than 200 players between the ages of 10 and 16 from 15 different states.

Hannah Dederick

NCAA

Hannah Dederick of Illinois made history on Saturday when she won the first 100-meter wheelchair dash at the NCAA Outdoor track and field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Numbers game: 16.15

Seconds is all Hannah Dederick needed to cross the finish line first on Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor track and field Championships to win the women’s 100-meter wheelchair dash for Illinois. Dederick followed up a men’s national title in the 100-wheelchair dash on Friday by fellow Illini Evan Correll. Hoda Elshorbagy (second), Rachel Cleaver (fifth) and Bree Doll (eighth) also represented the Illini in the women’s 100 wheelchair on Saturday.

Keenan 1

David Keenan will try to add another UI Open title to this collection this upcoming weekend.

Crowd control

Three events I’m paying attention to

1. Lafayette (Ind.) Aviators at Danville Dans. The Dans will try to maintain their lead in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference in the Prospect League when they host the Aviators at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Danville Stadium.

2. The U.S. Open. Current Illini Jackson Buchanan, along with former Illini Thomas Detry and Brian Campbell, will tee off Thursday in Pinehurst, N.C., for golf’s third major of the year.

3. The UI Open. David Keenan is the reigning champion of the annual event that started in 1953. This year’s first round of the tournament is Saturday before the second round concludes Sunday, with all the action at the UI Course in Savoy.

Coach’s corner

Three questions with Cerro Gordo/Bement girls’ basketball coach Andy Buhr. The Broncos have posted three straight winning seasons with Buhr and are 59-35 in his three seasons in charge:

1. My favorite sports team is … Illinois basketball.

2. Three coaches I’d like to have dinner with are … Joe Maddon, Phil Jackson and John Wooden.

3. My biggest pet peeve is … we still can’t figure out what constitutes a travel in basketball.
