PREVIEW and TV TIMES: 2023 Augusta National Women’s Amateur

The fourth playing of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur gets underway on Wednesday, March 29 with an elite field of 72 women’s amateurs competing over 54 holes of stroke play for one of amateur golf’s most coveted championships.

The first 36 holes will be played at Champions Retreat Golf Club (Island and Bluff nines) on Wednesday and Thursday and after a cut, the top 30 players and ties will compete in the final round at Augusta National Golf Club on Saturday, April 1. The full field will play a practice round at Augusta National on Friday.

This year’s ANWA will feature expanded broadcast coverage, as Golf Channel will televise the first and second rounds from Champions Retreat from 1:30-3:30 p.m. ET. NBC will air the final round from Augusta National beginning at 12 noon ET on April 1.

A Look at the Field

The fourth edition of the ANWA features 29 of the top 30 players in the current women’s world rankings. Six of the top-10 players are returning to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, including Sweden’s Ingrid Lindblad (No. 2), Japan’s Rin Yoshida (No. 4), and Americans Rose Zhang (No. 1), Rachel Kuehn (No. 7), Amari Avery (No. 8) and 2022 Champion Anna Davis (No. 9) while first-timers inside the top-10 include Spain’s Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio (No. 5) and Japan’s Saki Baba (No. 3), Yuna Araki (No. 6) and Sayaka Teraoka (No. 10).

What’s at Stake

The winner of the ANWA will earn exemptions into three majors: the Chevron Championship, U.S. Women’s Open and AIG Women’s Open, an invitation to the next five Augusta National Women’s Amateurs and any USGA, R&A and PGA of America amateur championships for which she is eligible for one year, provided the champion remains an amateur.

A Look Back at the First Three Championships

2019: Kupcho outduels Fassi to win the first ANWA title

In 2019, Wake Forest’s Jennifer Kupcho, then the world’s top-ranked amateur, played her final six holes in five under par, including an eagle on the par-five 13th, to prevail against Mexico’s Maria Fassi of Arkansas and become the first champion of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Kupcho’s five-under-par 67 – the lowest round of the championship – in the final round led to a four-stroke victory at 10-under-par 206.

2021: Kajitana becomes first-ever Japanese winner at Augusta National

After a one-year pause due to the pandemic, 17-year-old Tsubasa Kajitani defeated Wake Forest’s Emilia Migliaccio with a par in a one-hole playoff to win the 2021 Augusta National Women’s Amateur at 1-over-par 217. With the win, Kajitani became the first international ANWA champion and the first winner from Japan at Augusta National in any tournament.

2022: High Schooler Anna Davis takes down two of the game’s best collegians

Last year, Anna Davis, a relatively unknown high-school sophomore from San Diego, became the youngest winner in the short history of the event as she finished at 1-under par for a one-stroke victory over LSU teammates Latanna Stone and Ingrid Lindblad. Stone had her hands on the championship as she held a two-shot with two holes remaining, however, a double-bogey on 17 followed by a bogey on the last gave Davis the title.
