21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic took a moment to express his grattitude to his fans for their support and noted he is preparing for the US Open and still hoping he gets allowed to compete in New York. Djokovic, 35, hasn’t been vaccinated against COVID-19, and per the current United States vaccine laws, he can’t enter the country as an unvaccinated foreigners.
“I just wanted to take a moment and say to all of you how grateful I am to see so many messages of support and love from all around the world these days,” Djokovic wrote on Instagram. “I wasn’t expecting it, and that’s why it feels so mindblowing.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU. It feels special that people connect with my tennis career in such a loving and supportive way and wish for me to continue to compete. I am preparing as if I will be allowed to compete, while I await to hear if there is any room for me to travel to US.
Fingers crossed!”
Djokovic was hoping to start his season at the Australian Open but how that went is well-documented.
After winning Wimbledon, Djokovic underlined he does not plan on taking the vaccine just so he could compete at the US Open. Also, Djokovic made it clear to reporters that he won’t try to force his way into the United States.
Djokovic admitted the Australia visa saga was a “very unpleasant experience” and he doesn’t want to go through a similar experience again. After not being allowed to compete at the Australian Open and losing in the French Open quarterfinal, Djokovic lifted his first Grand Slam at Wimbledon.
Djokovic now has one more Grand Slam than Roger Federer but also one Grand Slam less than Rafael Nadal. It remains to be seen if Djokovic will get a chance to compete for his 22nd Grand Slam at this year’s US Open.
