Novak Djokovic’s presence at the next US Open is increasingly in doubt. Taking into account the regulations in force in the United States, which require travelers to present a complete vaccination cycle at the border, the Serbian could not participate in the American Masters 1000 and, above all, arrive in New York before the last Slam of the year.
Despite this, Djokovic, born in Belgrade, has decided to train non-stop and wait until the last moment in the hope that the rules of entry into the country will change. Support for Djokovic has grown by leaps and bounds in recent days: from the petition launched on change.org, the famous free platform for social campaigns, to the words of John McEnroe and various American celebrities.
The 21-time Slam champion wanted to thank all the people who showed him their support through his Instagram account. “I just wanted to take a moment to tell everyone how grateful I am to see so many messages of support and love from all over the world these days,” Djokovic wrote.
“I didn’t expect it, that’s why it’s all so amazing. I just wanted to say thank you. It’s special that people connect with my tennis career in such a loving and supportive way and want me to keep competing.
I am preparing as if I am allowed to compete, while I wait to find out if I will be allowed to travel to the United States. Let’s cross our fingers.” Djokovic is entered in both the Cincinnati Masters 1000 and the US Open, but everything will depend on the regulations in force in the coming weeks.
The USTA has made it known that the tournament will not impose any limits on unvaccinated players, but will respect the government’s position on the entry of foreigners into the US.
Now the sole coach of Novak Djokovic since the departure of Marian Vajda last March, Goran Ivanisevic is a happy coach a few weeks after the 21st Serbian Grand Slam crown at Wimbledon.
Asked by the Croatian news agency Hina about the still current domination of the Big 3, even if Roger Federer has been injured for a year, the winner of Wimbledon 2001 is absolutely not surprised. “Even before I became Djokovic’s coach, I was already saying that Novak and Nadal would end up winning more than Federer. If they are healthy, they have no limits. I think they will continue to win.”
