When you think of football positions that usually use up a lot of an NFL team’s salary cap space, you usually think of positions like quarterback, wide receiver, offensive line, cornerback, or defensive line. But you don’t typically think of tight ends in that conversation – unless, of course, you’re the New England Patriots.
As Robert Mays of The Athletic pointed out in a tweet on Friday, the New England Patriots currently have a ton of cap money tied up in tight ends after spending an absolutely absurd amount of money on the position back in 2021.
“The sheer amount of money that New England spent on tight ends in 2021 becomes even more shocking every time I think about it. Hunter Henry has a $15.5 million cap hit this year — that’s 2nd among tight ends and would rank 10th among RECEIVERS in 2023,”

It’s an extremely strange strategy to spend so much on one position group, especially given that the Patriots don’t really have a superstar tight end like Travis Kelce. It also hasn’t really worked for the team so far, especially given how much New England struggled on offense last year.
As a result, the NFL world had plenty to say about the strange move.
I was so sure the Pats would become a 13 win team in 2021 because of the Henry-Smith combo. What an absolute disaster. https://t.co/8ROzEUHinD

Makes you wonder what Belichick the GM would’ve done for 20 years if he didn’t have Brady.

It’s even funnier when you remember they drafted 2 Tight ends in the third round in 2020

Bill wanted to prove to everyone that winning FA isn’t good. The Nelson Agholor contract was bad as well.

It’s not exactly a conventional approach to building an NFL roster, and it’s easy to see why fans are second-guessing the team.
