A new hack that went viral on TikTok may help those who find themselves tripping over answers in job interviews.
TikTok creator @hannahgetshired suggested using the artificial intelligence program ChatGPT to prepare for job interviews in a video posted on the platform in mid-March, which has since inspired viewers to use it too.
“It will work for every single job,” she says in her video, which has more than 2 million views as of May 26.
But while Hanna Goefft, the woman behind the account, told Insider the platform helps her come up with ideas, users should be mindful that “it is not flawless and should not be blindly relied upon.”
Here’s how people are using the software to help in their job searches — and some pitfalls experts say to avoid.
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence program that interacts with users and was first announced in November, McClatchy News previously reported.
Users can ask ChatGPT questions, tell it to write stories and more by typing instructions for the bot. In seconds, the program will respond with a “human-like” style based on the massive amount of text it was trained on.
To help with interviews, Goefft copies the full job description text, puts it into ChatGPT and tells it to generate interview questions based on the job details and analyze the position based on keywords. Then, the interviewee can use this to help come up with strong responses to potential interview questions.
“I’ve been doing this for a few weeks and now I’m being flown to another state for a second interview at my dream job,” one viewer said. “No joke.”
“I’m a recruiter and I second this,” another said. “The job description is a great source for what questions you might expect (in an) interview. Use it!”
More viewers expanded on Goefft’s idea — ask ChatGPT for the best answers to each of its questions, one recommended. Paste in your resume and ask it to connect potential answers with your previous experience, a second added.
“I swear learning how to use ChatGPT to maximize its potential is going to be a whole acquired skill set,” one viewer commented.
Artificial intelligence platforms like ChatGPT can wield extensive, accessible power, but some career experts warn job searchers and employers alike to use it wisely.
Using AI to write responses, cover letters and resumes can put you at a disadvantage, resume writer and former human resources manager Shilpa Laharwal wrote on Linkedin.
“Remember that resume writing is a collaborative and personalized service that cannot be automated by AI, online resume builders or even ChatGPT,” Laharwal said before listing downsides when using AI on job applications.
A resume written with ChatGPT can be more generic and often focus on what the employer wants to find and not what the job seeker needs in a position, Laharwal said.
“It lacks the personal touch where we learn about a candidate’s human experiences, anecdotal evidence to back up their skills, and passion for the role,” Chris Willsher, an expert at Reed recruiting company in the United Kingdom, told Insider.
On the flip side, employers should be wary when using AI platforms to find employees, Recruiter.com reports. It may provide quicker and better communication to answer applicant questions, but it won’t have any human judgment. It may be better at finding “quality candidates,” but it might not be able to recognize when a skill applies to a position, the Recruiter.com post explains.
“While AI has great potential, it’s not a silver bullet that can solve all recruitment challenges. Human judgment and intuition still play a critical role in the hiring process,” according to the Recruiter.com post. “This combination will lead to a more efficient, fair, and candidate-friendly recruitment process, helping companies attract and hire the right talent.”
