Jason Roy, one of the most explosive opening batters in the world, might have put his international career in jeopardy as the 32-year-old is set to forgo his central England contract, as per reports. Roy, who recently played in the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), is likely to sign up with the Los Angeles Knight Riders, KKR’s sister franchise in the Major Cricket League (MLC) in the USA on a two-year deal.

Roy, who is currently a contracted player for England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on an incremental deal till October, is set to receive £ 300,000 in a lucrative deal (roughly INR 3.067 crore) for two years as reported by Daily Mail Online. Moving away from a central contract, the MLC deal could make Roy the first England player to prioritise his T20 franchise career over the national one. This would mean, Roy will risk his participation in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Roy was one of the faces of England’s white-ball revolution alongside Jos Buttler led by Eoin Morgan. However, in the last 12 months, his run-scoring form hasn’t been grat and was dropped out of the side, especially in the T20s. The report mentioned that Roy has been in talks with ECB in the last week or so regarding his future with the England team and the announcement might be due in a few days’ time.

Roy, who was dropped from England’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad, is very much part of the fold in ODIs and has already shown what he can do with a century each against South Africa and Bangladesh, followed by a blast of 145* off just 63 in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) playing for the Quetta Gladiators. After going unsold at the IPL 2023 auction, Roy was signed up for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL for INR 2.8 crore and the Surrey batter smashed 285 runs at a strike rate of 151 including a couple of half-centuries.
