Hundreds of Cambridge and Plainville biotech employees are facing layoffs by March 30, state filings show.

Thermo Fisher Scientific, a Waltham-based biotech company, is cutting 300 positions across two locations.

The company filed a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notice (WARN) with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Friday, Jan. 31.

The news comes just one day after the company revealed a 5% year-over-year revenue increase in Q4 2024 among several other areas of growth in its financial earnings report, federal filings show.

According to FiercePharma, the company confirmed layoffs in an emailed statement but did not comment on the status of the Cambridge and Plainville facilities.

“Thermo Fisher Scientific continuously evaluates opportunities to enhance our operational efficiency and better serve our customers,” the statement read.

“In light of recent shifts in customer timelines and utilization needs, we are making strategic business adjustments.”

In November 2024, the company filed a WARN notice to lay off 160 employees three facilities in Cambridge, Lexington and Plainville. According to state filings, that round of layoffs kicked off in January 2025.

A Thermo Fisher Scientific spokesperson said in November the company is planning on closing its Lexington facility and would expand operations in its Plainville location, FiercePharma reported.

According to the Boston Globe, a company spokesperson said the most recent round of layoffs was prompted by “recent shifts in customer timelines and utilization needs.”
