A recent incident in Navi Mumbai highlights the dangers of online fraud, particularly for those seeking work-from-home opportunities. According to a report in news agency PTI, a 37-year-old pregnant woman from Airoli fell victim to a scam that cost her over Rs 54 lakh.
The woman, who was on maternity leave and looking for ways to earn additional income online, was lured by the promise of freelance work.The fraudsters offered her a seemingly simple task: Rating companies and restaurants. They claimed that after completing five such tasks, she would receive a substantial payment.
Believing their claims, the woman followed the given instructions and made payments totalling Rs 54,30,000 to various accounts between May 7 and 10. However, after completing the tasks, she was unable to contact the fraudsters and as all her calls went unanswered. This made her realise that she has been cheated.
She reported the incident to the Navi Mumbai cyber police, who registered a case against four unidentified individuals under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act. The police are currently investigating the crime.
This case serves as a cautionary reminder for everyone seeking work-from-home opportunities online. It’s crucial to be wary of offers that seem too good to be true, especially those involving upfront payments.

Do your homework: Before engaging with any online work opportunity, research the company or individual offering it. Look for reviews and check their legitimacy.
Be extra cautious of offers that come via social media: Be extra cautious, if someone contacts you out of the blue with a work-from-home opportunity on a social media platform like WhatsApp, Telegram or Instagram.
Never pay fees for working: Legitimate work opportunities won’t require you to pay any fees in advance.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is: Don’t be swayed by promises of high returns for little effort.
