Google Maps on iPhones is getting this feature 5 years after its launch on Android – Times of India

Must read

Google Maps is bringing two features to iPhones: speedometer and speed limits. These features were launched on Android in May 2019 in over 40 countries, including India. Both of these are also making their way to CarPlay and will help iPhone users avoid speed ticketing.
The feature was first spotted by TechCrunch in India and Google later confirmed to the publication that it will be rolling out to iPhones users globally.

What are speedometer and speed limits features

Speedometer feature allows users to check their speed in Google Maps. However, Google notes that Speedometers shown in the app are for informational use only and users must make sure “to use your vehicles’ speedometer to confirm your actual driving speed.”
Meanwhile, Speed Limit alerts will let users know if they are driving too fast. The speed indicator will change colours if users go over the speed limit.
“External factors may cause the Maps Speedometer to differ from your actual speed,” Google noted

How to turn speedometer and speed limits features on

Users can turn on or off the speedometer and speed limits on supported devices and markets.

  • On an Android phone or iPhone, open the Google Maps app.
  • Tap profile picture or initial Account Circle
  • Tap on Settings and then open Navigation settings.
  • Under “Driving options,” turn on/off the Speedometer.

If the Speed Limits feature is available in your location, you can turn the speedometer on or off by tapping Speed Limit during navigation.
The feature was initially present in Google’s navigation app, Waze before coming to Google Maps. Apart from speeds, Google Maps also shows speed cameras and mobile speed cameras in several countries worldwide.
