Former Tech Mahindra Vice-Chairman Vineet Nayyar passes away

Vineet Nayyar, former Vice-Chairman of Tech Mahindra, passed away on Thursday (May 16), former MD and CEO CP Gurnani informed in a post on social media platform X. He was 85.

“Heartbreaking news…India has lost one its finest leaders today… #VineetNayyar.. Personally it’s like losing the light that has led me for decades…He was friend, philosopher, brother, guide & statesman par excellence.. My heart and thoughts with Reva and family. #OmShanti,” he wrote while informing about Nayyar’s death.

“Cherish Vineet for his contribution in building India, turning Satyam-TechM around, and years of exemplary leadership that helped us rise.. Sharing some of my fond memories and learnings of working with Vineet.. #RIPVineet you live forever in our hearts,” Gurnani added.

Vineet Nayyar’s role

Born on November 21, 1947, Nayyar is known in the tech industry to play a crucial role in Tech Mahindra’s growth and revival of Satyam Computer Services. Nayyar has donned many hats before becoming a tech evangelist.

In a career spanning over 40 years in both private and public sectors, Nayyar has led several organizations.

Nayyar earned a master’s degree in development economics from Williams College, Massachusetts. He is a former Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer, and later worked with the World Bank for eight years as their Chief and Head of the Energy Department, East Asia and Pacific.

As a bureaucrat, he served at various designations including District Magistrate, Secretary Agriculture & Rural development for the Government of Haryana and Director, Department Of Economic Affairs.

From 1986-1991, Nayyar served as the first chairman and managing director of GAIL under the petroleum ministry for five years.

It was under his watch that Satyam computers eventually became Mahindra Satyam. Tech Mahindra at the time was fully dependent on telecom for its revenue. Satyam brought with it customers in banking, healthcare, and retail.

IT industry body Nasscom said on X, “We will always remember the significant contributions of Vineet Nayyar, former Executive Vice Chairman of Tech Mahindra. His visionary leadership and dedication have left an indelible mark on the industry. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His impact and achievements have carved a lasting legacy.”

Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group, paid his tributes saying, “I remember when @MahindraUni was just a dream. A vision originally framed by Vineet Nayyar of @tech_mahindra. So proud to preside over its 1st convocation today with @KTRTRS as Chief Guest & Dr. Ella of Bharat Biotech as Guest of Honour. And with the students as the celebrities!”

“It saddens me to share the news of the passing of Vineet Nayyar this morning. Vineet was a larger than life figure in the Indian Business landscape. A distinguished IAS officer, who then served with the World Bank, he became the first Chairman of GAIL He then made a hugely successful transition to the private sector becoming the Managing Director of HCL Corporation Ltd., and the Vice Chairman of HCL Technologies Ltd. And it was from there that he and two of his close colleagues journeyed to Mahindra British Telecom. We called them the Three Musketeers!… Thank you Vineet, for your wisdom, your leadership and for committing the crowning part of your career to the Mahindra Group. Above all, thank you for your friendship. You will always live on in our hearts,” he added.
