Former India wicketkeeper-batter Farokh Engineer has emphasized the importance of preserving Test cricket alongside franchise league cricket. While countries like India, England, and Australia remain committed to Test cricket, players from smaller nations often prioritize franchise leagues due to the financial benefits they offer.
Engineer believes that the World Test Championship serves as a crucial demonstration to the world that Test cricket can be just as exciting as limited-overs cricket. He argues that while T20 leagues are thriving worldwide, Test cricket should never be sacrificed.
Engineer describes Test cricket as a strategic game that presents a true challenge to batters, with the outcome heavily influenced by pitch conditions. He compares it to a game of chess, where players must carefully strategize based on the conditions at hand.
Engineer further expresses his delight in India’s success in both Test cricket and limited-overs cricket. He also highlights the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a source of pride, stating that Indian cricket holds significant influence, and he is thrilled to see the country excel in both formats.
Currently, the second edition of the World Test Championship final is underway at The Oval in London. Engineer recalls India’s historic victory in 1971 when they won their first-ever Test match in England. Notably, Engineer played a significant role in that match, contributing 59 runs in the first innings.
