Popular TVs
Gaming is more popular than ever, and as a result, there are more gaming-specific TVs on the market, along with gaming consoles like the Xbox Series X. Gaming TVs have features that enhance gaming performance, including HDMI ports that support HDMI 2.1, fast processors, minimal input lag, and support for high dynamic range (HDR) video standards like HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Most OLED TVs include these features, but two of the four that made our rating use less expensive QLED technology. A gaming TV is likely to cost more overall, but many of the included features will enhance everyday viewing as well.
Our rating of the Best Gaming TVs of 2022 is taken from our rating of the Best TVs of 2022. All of the TVs in our Best Gaming TVs rating have the following features:

LG C1: The LG C1 is No. 1 in our Best Gaming TVs rating. It gets high marks for its picture quality – notably an outstanding contrast ratio and near-perfect, deep blacks. This OLED smart TV supports Dolby Vision IQ’s latest standard for HDR content, which calibrates your picture based on your environment. A near-instantaneous response, or low lag time, makes the LG C1 a good option for gamers. There are four HDMI ports that support HDMI 2.1 to connect your Xbox Series X or Playstation, and there’s a low-latency gaming mode. The C1 has other gaming-related features as well, like a variable refresh rate and gaming mode (low latency mode) to optimize performance when you plug in your console. This TV is excellent for use in a dark room, but some reviewers say it might not be bright enough in a well-lit room. The C1 is available in 48-, 55-, 65-, 77-, and 83-inch screen sizes.
LG G1: The LG G1, No. 2 in our Best Gaming TVs rating, is similar to its sibling the C1 and also features a VRR and a gaming mode. It has a proprietary EVO panel that’s about 20% brighter than the C1 and makes it better for use in bright rooms. The G1 is also made for wall mounting with a sleeker design, allowing it to mount flush against a wall. It doesn’t come with a stand. Because it has an OLED screen, the G1 has the same minimal input lag as the C1. However, as with all OLED TVs, leaving a static image on the screen for a very long time can lead to “burn-in”, where part of an image never quite goes away. This is something to consider, since many games feature scoreboards and other static graphics. The G1 is available in 55-inch, 65-inch, and 77-inch models.
Samsung QN85A: The Samsung QN85A ranks third in our Best Gaming TVs rating. Unlike the LG models, this TV uses Samsung’s “Neo QLED” 4K technology instead of OLED. It has the features most gamers are looking for, including low input lag, variable refresh rate, and HDR support, although not Dolby Vision. The QLED display delivers excellent brightness for any lighting situation and dimming technology to compensate for the lack of deep blacks. It includes a “game bar” which allows for real-time adjustments for games. It’s also a very thin TV, less than an inch deep for most models, if that’s a factor. The QN85A is available in 43-, 55-, 65-, 75-, and 85-inch screen sizes.
Samsung QN90A: This flagship TV from Samsung ranks fourth in our Best Gaming TVs and ties for seventh overall in Best TVs. Some reviewers say it has the best picture quality of any non-OLED TV, with exceptional brightness and color from Sansung’s Neo QLED screen technology. It performs well in brightly lit rooms and has an array of gaming features including HDR and VRR, and the same game bar as the QN85A. But the single HDMI input that supports HDMI 2.1 may disappoint gamers who want to connect two next-gen consoles simultaneously. It’s also more expensive than some OLED TVs. Screen sizes include 43, 50, 55, 65, 75, 85, and 98 inches.
Gamers want top picture quality and to meet the demands of today’s high-powered consoles need a gaming TV. These have robust processing power and an array of new technologies that improve the gaming experience with realistic colors, stunning 4K resolution, and image smoothing for action scenes. Other important features for gaming include HDMI 2.1 ports, support for HDR video, and low input lag. Many newer TVs have a gaming mode that cuts down on image processing to keep up with fast action. This might mean a reduction in image quality but will make games more fluid. In some cases these TVs will detect when a console is connected and automatically switch to gaming mode.
If you have invested in a next-generation TV console like the Xbox Series X, a gaming TV will allow you to take advantage of features that provide realistic action and a smooth gaming experience with minimal input lag. Today’s premium TVs do well for both television viewing and gaming. They typically have great picture quality and a large viewing area due to the use of full-array LED or OLED screens, HDR10 or Dolby Vision support, and a bezel-less design. Gaming-friendly features include minimal input lag, variable refresh rates, and HDMI 2.1 ports – all of which help give you a better gaming experience. In summary, a gaming TV is worth the cost if you want to play advanced games at higher resolutions while enjoying the latest screen technologies that make TV viewing a pleasure as well.
Our Best Gaming TVs are priced between $2,200 and $2800 for the 65-inch size based on suggested retail prices. A higher price will generally get you a bigger screen, and OLED TVs tend to be more expensive than LED models.
If you’re in the market for a gaming TV, look for the following features:
At U.S. News & World Report, we rank the Best Hospitals, Best Colleges, and Best Cars to guide readers through some of life’s most complicated decisions. Our 360 Reviews team draws on this same unbiased approach to rate the products that you use every day. To build our ratings, we researched more than 48 TVs and analyzed 18 reviews. Our 360 Reviews team does not take samples, gifts, or loans of products or services we review. All sample products provided for review are donated after review. In addition, we maintain a separate business team that has no influence over our methodology or recommendations.
The following describes our 360 approach to researching TVs to guide prospective consumers.
U.S. News analyzed and compared a variety of publicly available data, including internet search data, to determine which TVs Americans are most interested in. We found 48 TVs that stand out in terms of volume of searches and research among consumers, as well as across the different rating sources. After conducting a thorough analysis, we were able to condense the initial list to the 10 overall Best TVs. With the companies determined, we conducted a comprehensive research on their features to create a general layout of what consumers should know to assist with their purchasing decisions.
We then compared the available services provided by our top TVs across several criteria, including but not limited to cost, licensing, probability of being on time, customer satisfaction, and flexibility of services. Research shows that these are the most important criteria for people shopping for TVs.
U.S. News’ 360 Reviews team applied an unbiased methodology that includes opinions from professional reviews as well as consumer reviews.
Our scoring methodology is based on a composite analysis of the ratings and reviews published by credible third-party professional and consumer review sources. The ratings are not based on personal opinions or experiences of U.S. News. To calculate the ratings:
(a) We compiled two types of third-party ratings and reviews:
Please note that not all professional and consumer rating sources met our criteria for objectivity. Therefore, some sources were excluded from our model.
(b) We standardized the inputs to create a common scale.
The third-party review source data were collected in a variety of forms, including ratings, recommendations, and accolades. Before including each third-party data point into our scoring equation, we had to standardize it so that it could be compared accurately with data points from other review sources. We used the scoring methodology described below to convert these systems to a comparable scale.
The 360 scoring process first converted each third-party rating into a common 0 to 5 scale. To balance the distribution of scores within each source’s scale, we used a standard deviation (or Z-Score) calculation to determine how each company’s score compared to the source’s mean score. We then used the Z-Score to create a standardized U.S. News score using the method outlined below:
(c) We calculated the 360 Overall Score based on a weighted-average model.
We assigned “source weights” to each source used in the consensus scoring model based on our assessment of how much the source is trusted and recognized by consumers and how much its published review process indicates that it is both comprehensive and editorially independent. The source weights are assigned on a 1-5 scale. Any source with an assigned weight less than one was excluded from the consensus scoring model.
Finally, we combined the converted third-party data points using a weighted average formula based on source weight. This formula calculated the consensus score for each product, which we call the 360 Overall Rating.
